3 Life Lessons Gained from Living in a Tourist Attraction

sf

“If you keep doing what you are doing now, how will you feel in 1 year? 5 years?” I glanced around my cubicle, down at my snow boots, and felt my heart start to race. The only word I would think of was “miserable”!

My friend was chatting me, as I sat (dying) at my desk job in Wisconsin. She and I both knew that I was not fully living, even though I had landed a stable job, and had loved ones near by.

Like other millennials, I was horrified of settling for a status-quo life. Deep down, I knew my hometown and state job were not where I wanted to be. Travel has always called me. Feeling free (and warm) and purposeful and happy was not going to happen, if I just kept doing what I was doing.

So, I quit my job that week.

And I packed up and moved to the sunshine state a month later.

Loved ones were shocked. “Why would you leave this stable job?” “How will you afford health insurance?” “You know you can use your vacation days to visit California?” “You are not going to last long”…

Sure, I could travel, even if I had a full time job. But I didn’t just want to be California Dreamin’, I wanted to be California Living!

For over a year now, I’ve been making my Dream Life my Real Life. And I’ve learned 3 priceless life lessons by shifting my perspective on travel from vacation to lifestyle:

Adventure is anywhere

peru-Hanna-Hermanson

Many of us travel to get out of our comfort zone, to experience new cultures, to feel free from routine. And you can do that anytime, anywhere! Whether it’s food, conversation, hiking, or learning new things you are looking for– all you need to do is open your eyes! I thought that I needed to live in San Francisco to have access to diversity, yet I realize now that every single place has the potential to thrill and delight.

Seek something new and exciting in your home today. You can create so many of the benefits of travel without packing your bags! Try on a mindset that’s ready for adventure, everyday. It really doesn’t matter where you live, it’s the choices you make that lead to fulfillment and happiness.

You really can have it all

I used to think I could have a home base OR be a backpacker. I’m both now. Think you need to decide – live in an amazing city OR travel a lot? You can do both!

Stop thinking in “or” and “but”, and start thinking about “and”! When you say “I want to live in an amazing city AND travel” your brain goes into problem solving mode, and you will be amazed at the opportunities and ideas that come your way. I’m telling you, your dream life IS your real life!

Money is no problem
