Book: Yes Man by Danny Wallace
Oh man, I still LOVE this book! I’ve spoken LOADS about this book, Yes Man by Danny Wallace. It was one of the first books I read all the way to the end (I never read as a kid!) and it really got me thinking about what I was doing in life and asked the question: Surely life is so much more than 9 to 5 life?
Highly recommended as a starting point book to get you inspired for traveling the world, and changing your reality. (And let me save you best part of two hours, read this and don’t watch the American film with the same name with Jim Carey, its nothing like the book!!)
Discover more from the author Danny Wallace.
Book: 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferris
The now infamous 4 Hour Work Week from Tim Ferris is a must list for any travel related top list.
The book isn’t really about inspiration but it accidentally does this through the opening chapter. The first chapter goes into detail on Tim Ferris’s life that was possible through changing the way he managed his business from struggling and working over 16 hours per day to outsourcing with virtual assistants, which allowed him to use the profits to travel and have amazing experiences around the world. Remember your dollars or pounds go way further in the second or third world so you don’t need to make all that much.
This book was way ahead of its time, it got loads of press, negative and positive. Lots said the title was a joke and wasn’t possible but for many, it opened up their reality which is one of the reasons why I love this book! Nowadays, this isn’t all that unbelievable, digital nomads are doing this every day!!
Book: Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet books are amazing for inspiration to travel the world! Get a fix of the type of experiences you can see, do and explore throughout the world with these books. You might miss something along the way on your journey if you don’t have one of these in your backpack. The number one inspiration for travelers around the world!
Top tip: Buy from Amazon and find the books that are second hand, go for very good or good and get these at such a silly knock down price its very difficult not to buy them! I used loads on my first trip back in 2015 and deffo didn’t regret taking books on South America, Far East Asia and Australia.

Movie: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a 2013 American adventure comedy-drama film directed, co-produced and starring Ben Stiller and written by Steve Conrad.
I’ve seen this recommendation, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, on a number of lists I searched for back in early 2015 before I made the plunge and book my round the world trip! It’s an interesting movie and it does what you want it to do, it inspires you to change your reality and travel the world! Watch the trailer and decide yourself!
TV Series: Travel Man
Travel Man is a British television travel documentary series. It features presenter Richard Ayoade, traveling to a different location each episode with a celebrity guest.
I’ve just recently come across this TV series and I enjoy the humour of Richard Ayoade from the IT Crowd so wanted to check it out! It’s enjoyable and you get to see some awesome places around the world, easily inspiring the traveler in you!
Movie: The Bucket List
The Bucket List is a 2007 American comedy-drama film directed by Rob Reiner, produced by Reiner, Alan Greisman, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, written by Justin Zackham, and starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman.
Corporate billionaire Edward Cole and working class mechanic Carter Chambers have nothing in common except for their terminal illnesses. While sharing a hospital room together, they decide to leave it and do all the things they have ever wanted to do before they die according to their bucket list.
A bucket list related film, this will do what you need it to do – it’s sure guaranteed to inspire wanderlust!
Watch the official trailer of The Bucket List before you commit your time!
TV Series: The Trip
The Trip is a 2010 British television sitcom series directed by Michael Winterbottom, starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as fictionalised versions of themselves. Food critic Steve Coogan and traveling companion Rob Brydon trade delicious barbs and clever remarks as they tour various eateries in northern England.
Its been highly recommended to me to watch, and I need to get around to it! Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon are generally funny dudes so humour and inspiration to travel? You can’t go far wrong with that combo!
TV Series: An Idiot Abroad
Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the Emmy-winning duo responsible for the classic sitcom “The Office,” are the architects of this eight-episode practical joke-turned-sociology experiment.
It features Gervais and Merchant surprising their friend, the close-minded Karl Pilkington, with a trip around the world to visit the Seven Wonders. It’s a dream journey for most, but Pilkington has reservations, unlike many people he doesn’t want to do these things. He especially doesn’t want to become “one with the locals” at each step of the way, which is the mission of Gervais and Merchant!
Very successful Travel doc TV series, with actual LAUGH OUT LOUD moments in each and every episode, and even with Karl saying he wouldn’t do a second series he went onto series 2 where he got to choose his own personal bucket list, which had more than enough surprises to keep him guessing at each destination. Karl then went onto film three episode specials with a small friend, Warwick Davis, and then his own series “The Moaning Of Life”.
I really love this series, again, humour and travel inspiration! And the fact that you can actually see the change it did in Karl from episode 1 to the person he became, just shows you how powerful travel can be in changing your reality and life! A must watch!
